His beginnings were as a stage actor, but he became a prolific television actor from 1980 to 2000, mainly in Europe. His most notable role was in the Quentin Tarantino movie Inglorious Bastards in 2009, which launched him into worldwide fame. He also starred in the 2012 film Django Unchained. He received the Best Actor Award at the Cannes Film Festival and a Screen Actors Guild Award, an Academy Award, a BAFTA Award and a Golden Globe Award for both of his performances in these films.
