Top 25 Pictures of Young George Lucas This gallery features photos of a young George Lucas, including several from his beginning years as a film director in his early 30s. Born May 14, 1944 in Modesto, California, he was obsessed with race cars when he was a kid, and originally aspired to become a professional race car driver. In 1962, he was driving his Autobianchi Bianchina when he was struck by another car. His car flipped over and almost killed him, ending his race car dreams. He studied anthropology, sociology and literature at Modesto Junior College, and began filming race car events with his 8 mm camera. He transferred to the University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts, which was one of the first universities that taught motion picture film. It was during his college years that he met and became close friends with fellow filmmaker Steven Spielberg. In addition to film-making, Lucas also developed experience as an executive producer and writer. His most famous work is: American Graffiti, the Indiana Jones trilogy and the Star Wars film series, which was the highest-grossing film of all-time before being replaced by Spielberg’s E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.
